Author’s note: Written to mimic the same general tone and theme of a suicide note, the poem endeavors to detail the internal torment that the character seeks to escape from. While the first section is written in an ABABABAB format, it breaks into a AABB rhyme scheme as the tone of the poem gets even darker. This rhyming scheme is again broken in the last word “Goodbye” to create a sense of finality.
As I lay here
Broken hearted
It becomes clear
Finish what was started
And though it may seem like mere
Coincidence that my heart has parted
I know that every sneer
Just makes me more guarded
I do not think that in the end
I would be able to pretend
That all these scars just make me stronger
Instead they make the pain last longer
The lines begin to blur
Between friend and saboteur
Skeletons in my closet
Glimpses of my past they deposit
Haunting me with memories
Of which I hold no remedies
Now I bid farewell
Headed to heaven or to hell
All my wounds shall start to heal
The pain that death begins to steal
I'm sorry I couldn't stay with you
but you need to know that I'll miss you too
Goodbye
